Gaetano Pesce

(B. 1939)

Gaetano Pesce was an Italian-born architect and designer known for his innovative and provocative work that challenged traditional design conventions. Born in La Spezia, Italy, he left an indelible mark on the world of design with his unconventional and revolutionary creations. Pesce’s career took off in the 1960s when he moved to New York. He quickly gained recognition for his radical, organic and biomorphic approach to design, incorporating irregular, non-geometric shapes and unconventional materials. His work often blurs the boundary between art and functional design. He pioneered the use of resin as a material for furniture design. His colored, translucent resin chairs and tables embody a sense of play and unpredictability. Gaetano Pesce’s genius is renowned for its non-conformist and experimental nature. He has exerted a profound influence on the field of design, challenging established norms and inviting discussion on the relationship between form, function and material. His innovative use of materials and his willingness to address complex social and political issues through design have made him a leading figure in contemporary design. Pesce’s work often carried strong social and political messages. He used his art and design to comment on various issues, including gender equality, consumerism and cultural diversity. This makes him a unique artist, rightly recognized among others. He died in 2024.
